It doesn’t seem very long ago that I was taking photos of a very beautiful pregnant lady, Keshia, and now I had the opportunity to take pictures of the smiliest little man, Bennett!

My baby girl turned four last week, so to celebrate, I took her out for a little photo session. Admittedly, it was more my kind of celebration than hers, but she hung in there. I just love this girl!
I have managed to take a photo each day, although to be honest, a couple of days it has been 10:30pm and I get out the camera and take a shot of my kids sleeping, or something else random. However, these are some of the standouts from this 365 project so far.
One thing I did that I was pretty excited about was set up a mini “studio” to take a still shot of a toy camera. To do this, I used the little behind the door corner in our office, so I had three white walls around my little corner. I set the camera on an ottoman, and only used flash light bounced off of the side wall at a 45 degree angle. It was night time, so there was no other light in the room. I would get the shot set up, then ask my daughter to turn off the “big light” then I’d click. After a couple of less than perfect shots, I realized that the camera needed to be sitting on something white, too, so I took a poster and used the white back of it. I taped it to the wall a little above the ottoman, then draped the rest of it over the ottoman. Victory!
Here is the pull-back photo of what my “mini studio” looked like…
This little doll was so sweet and very expressive! And it was a treat to watch new parents, Kevin and Emily, as they loved on Lydia – thanks for inviting me to share this morning with you!
Also, I have many friends who are across Canada and the US who have just had babies and are asking for tips on taking photos of their little ones. So, here are a few tips for you:
1. A full tummy makes for a happy baby – feed them just before you shoot them (I couldn’t resist!)
2. The parents should wear black – it makes for a nice backdrop to have the baby against
3. Show the baby skin – it’s cute to have those little legs, tummies, shoulder blades on display
4. Use objects such a favorite stuffed toys, the parents’ hands, the parents’ feet, to show perspective
5. One of the poses I really love is the baby up against the mom’s shoulder, nestled in, with the mom’s chin gently resting against the head. It’s flattering for the mom and the baby.
6. Crying babies are cute.
7. Find the best light in your house and use it.
8. If you’re using auto settings on your camera, select the portrait setting (sometimes looks like a person’s head). This will allow you to focus on the baby and have a blurry background.
9. If you’re using manual settings, set your aperture wide (a low number) to have the focus on the baby with the blurry background.
10. Remember that they’re a baby, so you can’t go wrong. They’re going to look cute in any picture you take! Just make sure to take the time to do the photos, because they grow quickly! The first two weeks are typically the window of time you have before baby acne sets in and they aren’t sleeping as heavily (allowing for the sleeping photos where you’re able to place the baby in different poses without waking them). If you have missed this window, still take pictures! I recommend the book by MeRa Koh called “Your Baby in Pictures,” which breaks the first year down into stages, and suggestions of what to capture at each one.
Over this last year, I have read in a few places about something called a “365 Project.” Having never heard of it before, I wanted to read more about it… and when I did, decided that it was not something for me! Essentially, it involves taking a photo and editing it every day of the year for one full year. A recipe for failure in my mind.
However, now that it is January 1 and I’m in an adventurous, conquer-the-world mood, I have changed my mind. I was inspired by Click It Up A Notch, and as I’ve mentioned before, I need something to make me continue to take photos of my own family amidst all the sessions I do of others. So… here is day 1. I will not be posting every photo, but will share when I can, and when there’s a photo I especially love! Today was our last day in Langley, BC for the Christmas break, and we woke up to fog. I got really excited, though, when the sun came up behind the fog. I threw clothes on the kids and ran outside (with promises of chocolate bar pieces and spicy drink when we returned).
I love the softness of these photos – the light and the fog make it magic!
Found you on Click it Up a Notch. I am in love with the top photo with the hat. Beautiful boy and great capture!
Thanks so much, Tami. That was my favourite from the session, too!
