In Front of the Camera

It was my turn to have family photos done!  A friend of mine is also a photographer, so we did a swap.  Somehow, I had forgotten how much work goes into picking the right outfits for the family, and through this exercise of being in front of the camera for a change, I was reminded of a few things that I thought I would share with you as you prepare yourself for your next family photos:

1.  Bring water – as soon as we arrived, our middle daughter claimed she was dying of thirst.  There was no distracting her from this until she had a drink.

2.  Bring treats – small ones that can be eaten quickly and spread out through the session work the best.  Craisins, M&Ms, Skittles…

3.  Pay attention to shoes – as insignificant as shoes may seem, they definitely show in the photos and can help set the tone for the photos

4.  Color makes a difference – I often advise my clients to incorporate some “pop of color” in their wardrobe.  Something red, yellow, green, any other bright colour (think accessories, hair clip, scarf, or a piece of clothing or shoes)

5.  Co-ordinate, don’t match – you do not need to all wear white shirts with khaki pants.  Instead, find outfits with a similar tone or feel to them.  For example, for our shoot, I wanted an urban, modern/stylish look.  So, when I was picking a dress for Evera, rather than a frilly dress, I went with one that had the feel that we were going for.

6.  Embrace reality – rather than fight the kids to put on cheesy smiles, appreciate all their little expressions and think of photos as a time to remember their personalities at this stage in life.

Louise, Louis & Girlie Baby Bump

Maybe I have mentioned this before, but one of my favorite things about being a photographer is the chance I have to meet new people and make new friends.  The excitement in this couple as they anticipate the birth of their first baby was something to behold – that and their friendship with each other and love for one another as they get ready to begin this next stage of their lives together.  I know you’ll see what I’m talking about as you see the pictures…

Goofy Kids

In my attempt to allow you to see a few of the everyday photos of my kids, here are a few favourites from the last couple of weeks, with minimal edits as I am too busy editing photos of other people!  You’ll see Kaiya dressed up as a bride – the paper towel veil was her own invention, and she managed to keep it attached using barrettes that she put through holes in the paper towel.  Also, Evera had a moment of pure joy when I found a quarter in my wallet and was able to buy food to feed the pony.  And then there was the day at the Children’s Museum.  I just loved Hyatt in his little apron, even after he apparently tasted the paint at the painting wall.  And Evera and her friend, Lizzie needed to be almost literally torn away from this contraption that blew air.  Enjoy a peek into my life 🙂

Meet the Smiths

What a sweet, vibrant, fun family!  We did a morning photo session together at the park and it was great – I loved getting to see each personality come through.  The timing of the photos ended up being God-ordained, as Jen became really sick just a couple of days later.  So glad we caught this family in their prime, and also thankful that Jen is now on the road to recovery!

The Ohtaki Vow Renewal

Julie and Peter celebrated 10 years of marriage – and they celebrated in style!  With a small ceremony in their backyard, followed by a party with great friends and dancing.  Their love for each other was so apparent, and I thought it was beautiful how their kids celebrated with them – and even had some of their favorite songs as the first dance choices!

On a technical level, this event presented a challenge for me with an entirely different lighting setup than I choose when I do photo sessions.  I was able to take a few pictures of the kids before the ceremony began, and before we lost the light completely.  My very favorite photo of the evening was a spontaneous one of Julie as she readied to go down the aisle.  She turned toward the light of the house for a moment and it was magical.  So, I am sharing with you just a few of my very favorites of the evening:)
