Kaiya Ballerina

Last week, my oldest daughter, Kaiya (who will be turning 6 this month!) had her first ballet recital.  Her teacher recommended using the dress rehearsal for the photo opportunity that it was, so that we could just sit back and enjoy the “real” performance.  I am SO glad I listened to her advice, as the lighting was truly magical during the rehearsal, and all those little ballerinas were too cute for words.  Needless to say, I was the mamarazzi all the way.  And I’m thankful I was – check out these gems!  And in case it isn’t obvious (based on the number of pictures of her), Kaiya is the one with the red bow in her hair:)

Baby Ruby

This sweetie, Ruby, was born a couple of weeks ago to a friend of mine, Lindsay.  When I saw her, I literally just had to run and get my camera!  That little face was begging for pictures to be taken:)  And she has the cutest little collection of headbands, so much cuter than what was available just a few years ago when I had baby girls.  These ones were made by an Etsy vendor called A Little Lady Shop – makes me want another baby girl myself!

Rocky Beach

The rocky beach in Dana Point is one of our favourite places to go when we visit my husband’s parents.  This is where Hyatt’s family has had many family photos taken over the years, this is where Hyatt proposed, and this is where and this is now where our children love to play and explore the tide pools.  I love this shot I captured of Kaiya as she took in the view.  One thing I find I have a tendency towards is filling the frame.  I’m a portrait photographer, so many of my pictures are really about the faces.  So what I particularly appreciate about this photo is that it is one that I stepped back and took in the surroundings.  The place as well as the person.

The Adams Family

I know you aren’t supposed to play favourites, but I have to say that this photo shoot was one of my favourites for a few reasons:

1.  This is my sister-in-law and her family.

2.  They are a particularly beautiful family (check out Maki’s hair and Justine’s smile!)

3.  I got to work with a completely new (and very fun, might I add) location

4.  Allison, my sister-in-law, is an artist (in many ways: actress, painter, photographer, you name it).  Vernon, my brother-in-law, is also an artist (his medium of choice being font design).  Because of this, I felt like I had extra license to just “play” with the shadows and composition a little more than I normally would.

So, that said, you’ll notice that I processed a few of these pictures in a more “edgy” way than normal.  It just seemed to fit the style and feel.  One thing I love about photography is that there is always something new to learn and try!

Happy 6 Month Old

Don’t you just want to pinch those cheeks??!  Braden is just a content, happy little man.   It was such fun capturing his big eyes and lovable personality as he showed off his tummy time skills and tried so hard to sit up on his own.  You can see how much his mom and dad love him, and it’s no wonder!  We decided to do the photos on the heart of Stanford campus, as the Rogers family is going to be moving back to Texas at the end of the summer.  California will be sad to see these sweet people go.
