Last month I had the chance to take maternity photos with Louise and Louis, and now I have met their gorgeous girl, Ella. She’s quite perfect. And their love for her is impossible to miss.

There’s a trap that some of us photographers who start a business fall into – and that is neglecting to document our own kids’ lives. I still try and do photo sessions with my kids every so often, but capturing their everyday moments doesn’t happen nearly as often as it should. So, I asked my friend, Lisa, to keep me accountable on this. To try and get at least one good picture of each child each week. I have to admit that part of my issue has been the ridiculous clutter that plagues our house. Who wants pictures that remember the mess forever?
My brainwave was to clear one area of the house for the purpose of play time and some “natural” photos. I picked an area with the light I wanted – the morning light, which happens to be great in our kitchen. Another nice thing about kitchens is that they often have a lot of white space – especially if you happen to have white cupboards like I do. I had one particular photo in mind that I wanted to take, which was Hyatt as he dragged his sleep slack around. It’s one of his new favourite things to do. I purposely took his pants off, because I wanted his little, chubby legs to help portray his 17 month age as he toddled through the kitchen with sleep sack in tow. And voila!
This “Joy” picture was one of my favourites of my time with the Foley family. Whitney was happy in the beginning, as she walked along with the rest of the family, but then she lost some of her joy as our time wore on. Taking photos of this family, though, filled me with joy! Noah, Marshall and Whitney all had such great expressions throughout. At one point, Tiffany tried to get Noah to laugh by asking, “What would you do if I put a pickle on your peanut butter sandwich?” Instead of the giggles we expected, he put a thoughtful finger to his lips and pondered this question. Then decided that he would eat it.
What a treat to do a mother/daughter shoot! I loved how the bright colours worked with the non-fussy white brick background, so the focus really stayed on the interaction between the two of them, and all of Claire’s sweet expressions.
Over the Thanksgiving weekend, our family went down to San Luis Obispo, CA, to spend it with my husband’s aunt, his parents, sister, uncle, and all the people that went along with those. It was a wonderful time with family! We managed to fit in a photo session with Hyatt’s gorgeous cousins, Bonnie, Bethany, and Mary, and I was reminded of that stage in my life, not so long ago, and the fun, sweet, sometimes challenging moments of life with sisters (or, in my case, sister). Just a quick drive from the house was a white octagonal barn, another white barn, and a great gravel road. Models, light, location… check check check. One of the moments I just loved being a photographer! Thanks girls for letting me hang out with you! 🙂
